Methadone (MTD)

What is it?

Methadone is a synthetic, narcotic analgesic which is a form of pain killer. It is used for pain relief, but also in the treatment of heroin addicts in order to help them lower their cravings for heroin and eventually not break the addiction. Similar to morphine and originally created as a less addictive pain killer, methadone is still highly addictive and can easily become dangerous if not carefully monitored by doctors.

What are the health risks?

Short Term Effects:

  • Restlessness
  • Vomitting
  • Nausea
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Constipation

Long Term Effects:

  • Eliminated Cravings of other opiates
  • Lowered testosterone levels
  • Disruption of menstrual cycles
  • Respiratory complications
  • Sexual Dysfunction
  • Altered cognitive function[2]

 

 

 

 

How is it used?

Methadone is typically ingested in oral forms of tablets, powder and liquids. It can also be administered through injection which increases the risks of several diseases including HIV/AIDS.
